• Squaring Up

  • Purpose

Players practice squaring up to the basket before shooting.

  • Drill Setup

Players get a ball and line up on the baseline.

  • How It Works

    1. Players line up on the baseline. They toss the ball out in front, step forward , catch it, pivot and square up to an imaginary basket. Go to halfcourt and back.
    2. Next they toss the ball forward, catch it and do a sweep (sweeping the ball from one side of the body to the other) on the catch. They go to half court and back.
    3. Next they toss the ball out in front, catch it and do a combo move where they sweep the ball and then square up.

Players go to half court and back squaring up to an imaginary basket.

  • Coaching Tips

When pivoting players should alternate – first they pivot right, next they pivot left, and so on.

On the sweep, players should be “playing strong with the ball” – in other words, they should be sweeping the ball with a hard and crisp arm action.
