• The Gate Drill

  • Purpose

Keeps players in motion to stress the defense and generate open looks.

  • Drill Setup

1 is at the top, 2 and 3 are on the blocks, 4 and 5 are on the wings.

  • How It Works

    1. 4 and 5 pick down with 2 and 3 running out to the wings.
    2. 1 passes to 2 who first looks at 5 in the post.
    3. 1 runs over and screens for 3 who flashes to the top of the key.
    4. 2 passes to 3 and then 2 runs off screens from 5 and 4 to the post.
    5. 3 passes to 1 who passes to 2 in the post.
    6. Motion repeats until a shot is taken.

On the initial action, 2 looks for 5 in the post.

If 5 isn’t open, the players reverse the ball to the opposite side.

  • Coaching Tips

If the wing is passing to the post, he should use a wraparound pass or a bowling pass (roll the ball). He should not use the two hand over the head pass (it’s too easy to pick off).

Make sure players stay in motion. They should be passing and moving – cutting hard to create open offensive opportunities.

Practice the offense by having five players run the motion continuously for 30 seconds, then sub in a new five.
